Standard four-wheel dollies cannot safely handle 2,500-lb fireproof file safes, architectural glass partitions, or industrial plotters. Specialty rigging is the discipline of moving objects that are too heavy, too fragile, or too valuable to be handled by a general office crew.
Floor Load Distribution
High-capacity commercial safes exert extreme point-load pressures that can crack decorative terrazzo or stress structural floor pans. Before the safe moves, a rigger calculates the pounds per square foot at the route and destination. Steel plates or plywood runners distribute the load across a wider footprint so the floor never sees the safe's true weight concentrated in one square inch.
Stair-Climbing and Elevator Protocols
Electric stair-climbing dollies and motorized hand trucks handle up to about 1,000 lbs on stairs. Above that, riggers use a crane, a hoist, or a gantry. Elevators are rated for a specific capacity — verify the elevator's load plate before loading a safe, and never exceed it. A safe dropped into an elevator shaft is a catastrophic loss and a building shutdown.
Crane and Hoist Rigging
For upper-floor safes, lab freezers, or large sculptures, a crane is often the only option. Riggers plan the lift with the crane operator, including the boom reach, the radius, and the rated capacity at that radius. Everything below the lift is closed to foot traffic, and the rigging crew is radio-equipped and trained in hand signals.
Specialty Items to Flag Early
- Fireproof file safes (deed safes, records safes)
- Large-format plotters and production printers
- Medical and dental chairs and diagnostic units
- Server racks above standard rack weight
- Art, sculpture, and museum-grade fixtures
If your inventory contains any item over 500 lbs or any fragile object of unusual value, flag it to your mover at the bid stage. A specialty rigger is a separate crew, a separate truck, and a separate insurance endorsement — and discovering that mid-move is the most expensive way to learn it.
