High-density mobile shelving systems like Spacesaver condense thousands of file boxes into rolling carriages that ride on a steel track. The track is the heart of the system — and the most expensive thing to get wrong in a relocation. An out-of-level track binds the carriages, strips the drive, and eventually seizes the whole system.
Structural Subfloor Assessment
Before the move, a structural engineer confirms the destination floor can carry the system's loaded weight. High-density systems can exceed 300 lbs per square foot loaded — well above typical office live loads. If the floor is not adequate, the system either moves to a ground floor, or the floor is reinforced before installation.
Track Leveling and Reinstallation
The steel track is reinstalled against a laser-leveled reference line. Each section is shimmed to within the manufacturer's tolerance — typically less than 1/16 inch across the length of the rail. An out-of-level track is the single most common cause of premature drive failure in a relocated system.
Sequential File Re-Indexing
The carriages and the files they carry are moved in a documented sequence so each file returns to its original carriage and shelf. A law firm or accounting archive that loses its file sequence has not moved its filing system — it has destroyed it. Label every carriage, every shelf, and every box before disassembly.
Manufacturer Recommissioning
Most high-density systems should be recommissioned by a factory-authorized technician after reinstallation. The recommission includes track leveling verification, drive motor test, and safety sensor calibration. Skipping it voids the warranty and, more importantly, skips the safety check that prevents the carriage from crushing someone who reaches into the aisle.
A high-density filing system is a long-term investment in storage density. Relocating it is a project, not a task — and the right crew treats the track, the sequence, and the recommissioning as three separate scopes, each with its own sign-off.
