Acoustic Fabric & Demountable Glass Wall Systems: Moving and Reconfiguring

Preserving NRC acoustic ratings, ceiling track alignments, and frameless glass door hardware in modern open offices.

Modern workplaces rely on modular acoustic walls and demountable glass architectural systems. These are not the drywall offices of a previous generation — they are engineered assemblies designed to be moved. But "designed to be moved" is not the same as "easy to move," and a careless reconfiguration can permanently degrade the acoustic rating or the frame alignment.

Acoustic Fabric Walls

Acoustic walls carry a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) rating that depends on the fabric being stretched tight across the core. If the fabric is creased or the core is scratched during disassembly, the wall may look fine but measure worse. Remove panels in the reverse order of installation, label each panel to its track position, and re-stretch the fabric on the same tension setting.

Demountable Glass Systems

Frameless glass partitions travel in dedicated glass carts with rubber-lined channels. Each pane is labeled to its frame position because the hardware (top channel, bottom channel, and door pivot) is specific to that opening. Reinstalling a pane in the wrong opening will force the hardware and crack the glass at the next temperature swing.

Door Hardware and Pivots

Frameless glass doors use top pivots and bottom patches that are precisely aligned at the factory. Bag each door's hardware separately and label it to the door. A pivot reinstalled 2 mm out of line will bind the door within a week.

Acoustic Performance After the Move

After reconfiguration, the system should be re-tested for NRC if the original rating was part of the spec. Many manufacturers offer a re-certification service. For open-plan offices where speech privacy matters, the cost of the re-test is trivial compared to the cost of a workspace that no longer meets its acoustic design.

Modular walls are a long-term investment in flexibility — but only if they are moved by crews who know the system. A general mover can move the walls once; a certified installer can move them for the life of the lease.
